UN To Start Discussions On New Billion Dollar Agency
After giving the green light to a billion dollar super-agency for women last fall, the UN is scheduled to start informal consultations next week regarding the specific mission, staffing and funding proposals for the new "gender entity." According to a report from Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon:
"The composite entity will be the center of the gender equality architecture of the United Nations system, which comprises the capacities of the whole system working for gender equality and women's empowerment....The establishment of the composite entity will not relieve any other parts of the United Nations system of their responsibility for contributing to the promotion of gender equality and women's empowerment and for addressing women's rights and needs. Rather, the new entity will sharpen the focus and impact of the gender equality activities of the entire United Nations system..."
